How to Run a Traceroute

Instructions

The following instructions will guide you on how to run a Traceroute and save the results on your computer.

Windows 7

  1. Click on the Start menu and type Command Prompt in the Search field.
  2. Once the Command prompt opens, type "tracert www.mit.edu" You may replace www.mit.edu with any site. To provide a representative sample we recommend
    • ist.mit.edu
    • mitpress.mit.edu
    • libraries.mit.edu
  3. The Command Prompt will generate a number of traces and report Trace complete when done.

  4. Once completed, right-click the Command window for a dropdown menu. Select Select All and click the Enter key on your keyboard. This will copy the information.
  5. Open a blank Word Document, paste and save the information.

Mac OS X

  1. Click on the Spotlight (magnifying glass) at the top right corner of your screen.
  2. Search for Network Utility.
  3. Once opened, click the Traceroute tab.
  4. Enter the network address to trace in the field (example: www.mit.edu) and click the Trace button. To provide a representative sample we recommend you run traces on
    • ist.mit.edu
    • mitpress.mit.edu
    • libraries.mit.edu
  5. Once Complete, choose Select All from the Edit menu (or use the command A) and copy the information.

  6. Open a blank Word Document, paste and save the information.
